Swine Flu

Swine flu is a respiratory sickness caused by an influenza virus that mainly infects pigs. However, sometimes the virus can sicken humans. That is what has happened in Mexico in the last few weeks. The virus is believed to have sickened at least two thousand people there. Mexican health officials suspect at least one hundred fifty-two people have died from swine flu. Many of those who died were young adults who were healthy before they became infected. Mexico has suspended schools nationwide until at least May sixth. It has closed restaurants and churches. The government also cancelled large gatherings for sports, concerts and similar events. But many Mexicans have criticized the country's health measures. There are reports of seriously sick people being turned away from hospitals. Mexican Health Minister Jose Angel Cordova Villalobos says the government does not have enough health care workers for all the victims. But he says there is enough medicine to treat those who have swine flu.The disease has spread to at least seven countries and is suspected in others. The United States has more than forty-eight confirmed cases in five states. The United States declared a public health emergency to permit the use of federal money and the use of flu medicines in federal storage. American officials so far have released about twelve million treatments of Tamiflu and sent them to the states. They say additional supplies are available if needed. President Obama has said officials are being watchful, not fearful. The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is advising people to avoid travel to Mexico. But it has not suggested a ban. Swine flu can cause fever, head and muscle pain, cough, sore throat and stomach problems. If you have any of those signs, do not go to work or school. The only place you should go is to the doctor. There are simple ways to help prevent spreading the virus. Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze. Wash your hands with soap and water completely and often. Avoid contact with people who appear to be sick. Also, get enough good food and rest. Your body's natural defense system needs to be at its strongest to protect you against disease.

ABSTRACT

Background Switzerland introduced a pragmatic national drug policy when the former conservative abstinenceorientated politics proved unable to cope with an escalating number of users and related negative consequences for
public health and public order. The high visibility of ‘needle parks’ and the size of the acquired immune deficiency
disorder (AIDS) epidemic called for a new approach and for national leadership. Aims To describe the intentions, the
process and the results of setting up the new treatment approach of prescribing heroin to treatment resistant heroin
addicts, as an example of drug policy change. Materials and Methods A systematic collection of relevant documents
is analysed and used as evidence for describing the process of policy change. Results Measures to reduce the negative
consequences of continued use and to prevent the spread of AIDS were started mainly by private initiatives and soon
taken up officially in the ‘four-pillar’ drug policy (including harm reduction, prevention, treatment and law enforcement). Medical prescription of heroin to chronic, treatment-resistant heroin addicts was one of the innovations, based
on extensive scientific and political preparation. Detailed documentation and evaluation, ample communication of
results, adaptations made on the basis of results and extensive public debate helped to consolidate the new policy and
heroin-assisted treatment, in spite of its limitations as an observational cohort study. All necessary steps were taken to
proceed from a scientific experiment to a routine procedure. Discussion Comparable policy changes have been
observed in a few other countries, such as The Netherlands and Germany, based on the Swiss experience, with equally
positive results of heroin-assisted treatment. These experiments were designed as randomised controlled trials, comparing intravenous heroin against oral methadone, thereby demonstrating the specific value of pharmaceutical
diamorphine for maintenance treatment in opiate dependence. The positive impact of policy change and the positive
outcomes of heroin-assisted treatment were acknowledged increasingly nationally and internationally, but made it
difficult to continue the process of adapting policy to new challenges, due to the low visibility of present drug problems
and to changing political priorities. Conclusion A major change in drug policy was effectively realised under typical
conditions of a federalist country with a longstanding tradition of democratic consensus building. Facilitating factors
were the size and visibility of the heroin problem, the rise of the Aids epidemic, and a pragmatic attitude of tolerating
private initiatives opening the way to official policy change.

Loy Krathong Festival

One of the most popular festivals in early November is the Loy Krathong Festival. It takes place at a time when the weather is fine as the rainy season is over and there is a high water level all over the country.
“Loy” means “to float” and a “Krathong” is a lotus-shaped vessel made of banana leaves. The Krathong usually contains a candle, three joss-sticks, some flowers and coins.
In fact, the festival is of Brahmin origin in which people offer thanks to the Goddess of the water. Thus, by moonlight, people light the candles and joss-sticks, make a wish and launch their Krathongs on canals, rivers or even small ponds. It is believed that the Krathongs carry away sins and bad luck, and the wishes that have been made for the new year due to start. Indeed, it is the time to be joyful and happy as the sufferings are floated away.
The festival starts in the evening when there is a full moon in the sky. People of all walks of life carry their Krathongs to the nearby rivers. After lighting candles and joss-sticks and making a wish, they gently place the Krathongs on the water and let them drift away till they go out of sight.
A Beauty Queen Contest is an important part of the festival and for this occasion it is called “The Noppamas Queen Contest”. Noppamas is a legendary figure from the Sukhothai period. Old documents refer to her as the chief royal consort of a Sukhothai King named “Lithai”. Noppamas was said to have made the first decorated Krathong to float in the river on the occasion.
In Bangkok, major establishments such as leading hotels and amusement parks organise their Loy Krathong Festival and the Krathong contest as major annual function.
For visitors to Thailand, the Loy Krathong Festival is an occasion not to be missed. The festival is listed in the tourist calendar. Everyone is invited to take part and share the joy and happiness.

Penicillin

If Dr. Alexander Fleming hadn'tdiscovered penicillin in 1928,millions of people would have diedfrom infections. However, thewidespread use of penicillin as anantibiotic did not begin until the1940s, during World War II.

Electricity

If electricity hadn't been discovered, people would probably still be usingcandles or gaslights. Thomas Edisondeveloped the first incandescentelectric light bulb in 1879

Computer

If we didn't have computers, a lot of work would still be done with paper and pemcil, and prople in their homeswouldn't be able to be in contact with the entire world. The first PC was introduced by IBM in 1981.

Oil

If people hadn't discovered a lot of sources of oil, cars that run on gasoline wouldn't have become so common. The first commercial oil well drilled in North America was in Oil Springs, Ontario,Canada in 1858.

Airplanes

If the Wright brothers hadn't invented the first successful airplane, people might still betraveling long distances on ships, and there wouldn't be as much contact among people on different continents. The Wright  brothers first flew in an engine-propelled plane in 1903.

The Wheel

If the Sumerians hadn't invented the wheel in 5000 B.C.E., they couldn't have moved heavy loads. Six thousand years later, the Mayans and Incans in the Americas used the round shape in theirarchitecture, but they had no wheels.

Breaking Up-Broken Hearts

The following is a checklist to help you determine when it's time to move on. Just ONE "warning sign" is enough reason to break up.
But breaking up can leave you feeling down. Don't worry, this happens all the time, and it shouldn't last too long. Here is some advice on getting over a broken heart.

You shouldn't put up with an abusive partner. There is never an acceptable excuse for a partner to hurt you with words or actions. You don't have to tolerate any verbal or physical abuse. You should not accept common excuses like"I just had a bad day at work!", I'm under a lot of stress!!", "I'm really sorry. I promise L won't do it again!" You should think carefully before giving a person chance.

You ought to spend some time on your own in order to examine your feelings, but you mustn't become a hermit.

You partner should respect your opinions, decisions, morals, and values. He or she should support you and encourage you to reach your goals and dreams.

You should turn off the TV, and keep busy doing the things you enjoy.
Get out of the house and spend time with your friends.

If you partner has a problem with alcohol or drugs, you had better not believe that you'll be able to change his or her ways.

Remind yourself of your good qualities. Make a list!

You ought to have time for yourself, your family, and your friends. Your partner shouldn't be possessive and take up all your time and energy.

If you can't trust your partner, if  you think that he/she lies or cheats, or if he/she makes you feel unsafe, then you'd better listen to your instincts.

You should treat yourself right. Get enough sleep, eat right (stay away from junk food and caffeine), and spend a little extra time on how you look.

If you no longer enjoy time together, if you don't respect each other, or if you can't be honest with each other, then it's better to be on your own than in a ad relationship.

Most important: Don't feel sorry for yourself. Accept what happened and move on.

About Bicycles

Bicycle were invented in France in the 1790s. The first bikes were made of wood, had a front wheel that didn't move from left to right, and didn't have pedals. In 1817, a steerable front wheel was developed by Baron Karon Karl von Drais in Germany, and in 1839, the first pedals were introduced by Kirkpatrick MacMillan, a blacksmith from scotland. The first bikes had large front wheels because it was believed that the bigger the front wheel, the faster the bike.

THE FOLD-UP BIKE

It looks like an ordinary bike, but it's portable. This folding bike can easily be transported and stored when it is not in use. It can make your life easier. In contrast to the standard bike, it is much smaller and less bulky, so it can be parked and stored more readily. the fold-up bike is attractive, and it comes in a variety of styles.

A VISION OF THE FUTURE

The French writer Jules Verne wrote several books in the late 1800s. In them, he wrote about the future. he asked/ "What will life be like at the end of the
20th century-one hundred years from now?" In
one of his adventure novels (From the Earth to the Moon), his characters traveled to the moon in a rocket. In another novel (20,000 Leagues Under the Sea), his characters dove through the depths of the ocean in a submarine in the shape of a whale. In a novel titled Paris in the Twentieth Century, Verne
described a city with skyscrapers of glass and steel,
high-speed trains gas-powered automobiles, and a global communications network. Space rockets and submarines and other things in his novels didn't exist
in Verne's time, but many of the inventions that Verne imagined became reality by the end of the 1900s. That's why people call Verne a visionary

COMPACT CARS: The Smaller, The Better

The tiny classic is back, measuring 10 feet 11 inches (335 centimeters) long, 5 feet 5 inches (165 centimeters) wide, and 4 feet 11 inches (149 centimeters) wide, and 4 feet 11 inches (149 centimeters) tall. The new FIAT 500 is a triumph of Italian design. Every line has been crafted to reflect the legendary original, and buyers will be offered a variety of colors and options to customize their car. The FIAT 500 two-seater was introduced in 1957, and it became an automotive legend. It featured a 13 horsepower engine and had a top speed of about 53 miles (85 kilometers) per hour.

THE POLISH RIP VAN WINKLE

1 Rip Van Winkle was a character in a short by the American writer Washington Irving. In the story, Rip lived in a little town in the Hudson Valley, in New York, in the 1770s, around the time of the American Revolution. Rip went out hunting one day, took a nap under a tree, and fell asleep. He work up 20 years later to find himself a citizens of a brand-new country-the United States of America.

2.Similarly, in the movie Goodbye Lenin, Kathrin Sass, an East German woman, who dedicated her life to the perpetuation of Communist Party ideology, slips into a coma just before the fall of the Berlin Wall. When she wakes up eight months later, she is a member of a capitalist society. While she has been "asleep," governments have tumbled, barriers have fallen, and a whole new tide of Western goods and values has come flooding eastward to an eagerly awaiting public. Her loving son, Alex fears that the shock of finding such a radically changed world will lead to a heart attack. So he prepares an elaborate plan to protect her from the truth and to make her believe that the world she lives in now is the same as it used to be.
3.However, the story of Polish railway worker Jan Grzebski, 65, is not from a work of fiction, but is a real-life one. Grzebski went into a coma after he was hit by a train in 1988. He work up 19 years later in April 2007, into a world that had transformed itself from a Communist regime where food lines were common to a world of Big Macs and cell phones.
4."When I went into a coma, there was only tea and vinegar in the shops, meat was rationed, and there were long lines of cars at gas stations. Now there are so many goods in the shops it makes my head spin. What amazes me today is that all these people walk around with their cell phones and never stop complaining. I have nothing to complain about," said Grzebski.
5.At the time of the accident, Grzebski's doctor didn't give him long to live, but they were wrong. He survived thanks to the devoted care of his wife, Gertruda. She refused to believe the doctors and moved her husband's body  every  hour to prevent bed sores. :It was Gertruda that saved me, and I'll never forget it," said Grzebski.
6.Now he's getting to know his family, which has grown considerably since his accident. His four children are all married and have provided him with 11 grandchildren.

THE COMMUNICATIONS REVOLUTION

The first communications satellite, called Telstar, was launched from Cape Canaveral on July 10, 1962. This marked the star of  rapid transmission of TV signals over wide areas. What we take for granted today-satellite television, cellular telephones, wireless and high-speed Internet connections, and so forth-were part of science fiction only 40 years ago. Teenagers today are the first real citizens of the digital world. Unlike their parents, they have grown up in a world in which electronic delivery of information and entertainment is natural and more accepted than conventional forms like the newspaper, tape, or film.

THE EUROPEAN UNION

The European Union was formally established (with the Maastricht Treaty) on November 1, 1993. However, January 1, 2002, is a day the many people remember. It wasn't just the start of another new year. It was also the start of a new era for the 304 million people living in 12 European countries. On that day, the euro became the official currency of their countries. The European Union currently has 27 member states, and new member are expected to join. Citizens of member countries can travel freely, live, study, and work in any of the member countries.

THE FALL OF THE BERLIN WALL

On November 9, 1989, the East German government allowed its citizens to visit West Berlin. In celebration, crowds of East and West Germans climbed onto and crossed the wall that separated the two parts of the city of Berlin. Over the next few weeks, the people knocked the wall down. the fall of the Berlin Wall will always be remembered as a symbol of the end of the Cold War between the East and the West.

THE SPACE RACE

The Russians launched the world's first artificial satellite, Sputnik I, on October 4, 1957. Next, Sputnik 2, carrying a dog called Laika, went up into space on November 3. The Americans launched Explorer I, on January 31, 1958. The Americans won the race to land on the moon more than ten years later-with Apollo 11 on July 20, 1969. "This is one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind," said astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first person to walk on the moon. Space exploration has continued since then, and has brought new discoveries in many different areas of science.
